For Immediate Release Saturday, August 22, 2009

On Thursday, 8/20/09, at about 9:30 p.m., Bakersfield Police responded to a

report of a possible domestic violence situation, female screaming in an
apartment at 6700 Auburn Street. When officers arrived they detained Bret
Robert Mikuls (39) in the apartment complex parking area as he was
determined to be involved. Mikuls was found to be in possession of hundreds of
loose prescription pills such as Vicodin, Darvocet, and Percocet.

Officers attempted contact with the woman in the apartment; however, there was
no answer. Officers entered to check the woman’s welfare, and found her inside
and confirmed that a domestic violence incident had occurred. The victim
sustained minor injury. While investigating the domestic violence, the woman
pointed out several firearms in the home which included two illegally possessed
assault rifles.

Further investigation revealed that Mikuls was involved in the sales of

prescription medications. During the early morning hours of 8/21/09, a search
warrant was obtained for his apartment at 6700 Auburn Street, his vehicles and
his business, Smoke Supplies, 941 Baker Street. This led to the seizure of
additional firearms and additional illegally possessed prescription medication.

During this investigation a total of thirteen firearms were seized, including three
illegally possessed assault weapons, a sawed-off shotgun, and over 1200
illegally possessed prescription pills.

Mikuls was arrested for spousal abuse, possession of assault weapons, (2)
counts of possession of a controlled substance for sale, possession of a
