Greetings!
I am pleased to introduced a pictorial directory of services and businesses by Rastafarian repatriates and their families in Shashemene, Ethiopia. Below is an interview with Desmond Martin, who came to Ethiopia from Jamaica in 1975 at 23 years of age. Thirtyfour years later, he is a respected elder in the Shashemene Community and is the spokesperson for the Rastafarian community in matters involving the local government. Dessie Judah, as he is called by his brethren and sisters, serves on the Executive of the Twelve Tribes of Israel as Judah 1st and is Chairman of the Jamaica Rastafarian Development Community, a local NGO working for the development of the Shashemene community. Dessie was born on July 22, 1952 in Jamaica and is married to Mabrat Martin, with whom he bore four children: Caleb, Joshua, Joel, and Deborah. Publisher

When did you come to Shashemene? Firstly, let me introduce myself, my name is Desmond Martin of the tribe of Judah, a member of the Twelve tribes of Israel residing in Ethiopia for the past 34 years. Really, it was the organization in Jamaica that sent me to Ethiopia. We came in sequences, and when my turn came and I was asked if I was ready to go to Ethiopia, I accepted and faced the challenge. When I arrived in Ethiopia, I saw more on the positive side than what I expected. Firstly, the reception that was given to us by the Ethiopian people was tremendous. At that time, Ethiopia was passing through changes. His Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I left the scene of action the year before I came in 1975, so I expected the people to be on a negative vibes, but it was opposite. The people were very happy to see the Jamaicans coming in. What was your experience when you arrived? When I arrived to my destination in Shashemene, it is like a vision come to reality, because the place looked, in my view, just like Jamaica in the early days. Our prophet had advised us that we should imagine the land was like the Garden of Eden. It was really so. And, we observed that the challenges that faced us were to develop it in the manner Continued on Page 12

den of Eden, but by the sweat of your brow you must eat bread. When we came there was no employment opportunity, so we had to start by being local merchants. The suitcase of clothes we brought to Ethiopia was sold off in a jiffy in order to survive. At that time, clothes in Ethiopia was scarce. You could sell a pair of pants for five birr, which at that time was a lot of money. And then, through unity, because we all lived under one roof, we decided to do handcraft. We made afro combs from bicycle spokes and wood and formed them in the shape of Ethiopia and Africa. This improved our standard of living. Gradually we made coffee tables. I was one of the salespersons. It wasnt very lucrative, but it helped us to survive.
Seeing that Ethiopia awaits its creators and its creation, as stated by His Imperial Majesty, it is our utmost endeavour to see the accomplishment of that dream. That dream is to provide especially accommodations for the people coming after us and education for the youths. We have organized a community effort to establish a kindergarten and elementary school in our community. This organization, the Jamaica Rastafarian Development Community (JRDC, plans to venture into agriculture, social welfare, and health, in order to improve the standard of living of our community. that we knew would be an acceptable standard of living. Why did you come to Ethiopia? It is a pleasure to answer this question. First of all, I remember the days when His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I came to Jamaica and, for the first time a head of state from our motherland extended to us an invitation full of compassion. He even mentioned that the Ethiopians and Jamaicans were blood brothers, which moved our hearts and was one of the main reasons why I had an intention to come to Ethiopia. Secondly, it was our most beloved prophet, Dr. Vernon Carrington (Gad), the founder of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, who through the inspiration of God had opened the gates that we as members could get an opportunity to return to Africa. We did not leave Africa of our own free will; it was slavery that took us from the Motherland to the Western World. And, we having received the knowledge and in due time made our commitment to return to the land of the cradle of civilization. And. thank God we made it. Repatriation was made possible when His Imperial Majesty, in gratitude to the black people of the West who assisted Ethiopia in the times of the devilish attack and rape of Ethiopia by the fascist Mussolini, granted five gashes (500 hectares) of land in a town in the Southern region of Ethiopia called Shashemene. How did you survive when you arrived in Ethiopia? I believe that whatever part of the earth you find yourself you have to find a way to survive because as I said we are in the GarContinued on Page 26
