Who is Shawn Tenney?

The number one goal of Service-Learning has always been, to ensure a distinct learning experience and foster the success of students. But no one feels more strongly about that statement than the director of the Office of Service-Learning, Shawn Tenney. The first time I met with Shawn to get to know more about her and the organization, she was more than excited to get the chance to talk about the organization she feels so strongly about. I believe the Office of Service-Learning is such an important stepping stone on the path to success for students and we want to, more than anything, want students to walk away feeling good about themselves and like they made a difference in the world, Shawn said. Although she is a relatively new director to the office, Shawn has been credited with creating Western Michigan Universities First generation college student. A couple minutes into our meeting, she brought in Service-Learnings marketing coordinatior, Ashley Braats. Braats, who is also new to the Office of Service-Learning talked about the importance of getting the word out about service-learning. Not many people even know what servicelearning is even about or what we do, Ashley said. Shawn Tenney didnt just make the cut when it came to having the credentials for the director position of servicelearning; she is very over-qualified and experienced in many different fields. She graduated with a bachelors degree in Human Development and Social Relations along with a masters in Social Work. She worked in the health care field and has been a medical/surgical technician. Tenney has been the owner and care coordinator for a private home health care business. Shawn Tenney is a well-rounded woman with a burning passion for helping people. The goals she has for servicelearning are the goals she works toward every day to ensure the success of WMU students.
