Metropolitan Model United Nations Conference XLII

Arab League
Dear Delegates, Its our pleasure to welcome all of you to MetMUNC XLII at Plainview -Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School! We are very excited to be the Arab League Chairs. The Arab League, also known as the League of Arab States, was founded in 1945 to protect and improve the Middle East. It is the main international governing organization for the Arab World and serves as the principal forum for communication and cooperation between Arab nations. Members of the Arab League deal with a wide variety of issues, but in this conference we will be discussing Alternative Energy, Social Media, and Syrian Refugees and IDPs. This committee will focus on how these issues affect the Arab World, and what actions the Arab League can take to address them. Alternative Energy is a significant issue in the Arab World because many Arab countries have large reserves of fossil fuels, but an increasing number of Arab nations are rethinking how they obtain energy because of economic and environmental concerns. Social media is a hotly debated issue in the Middle East. The Internet has greatly affected the regions recent past during the Arab Spring starting in late 2010. Arab nations have had a variety of responses to social media, as some have censored the Internet while others have embraced it. Lastly, the Syrian Civil War has rendered millions of people homeless. Some people have remained in the country as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) while others have left as refugees. In this conference, we hope that you will all work with each other to come up with creative solutions to these issues, participate in productive debate, and pass resolutions. We look forward to seeing you all in December! Sincerely, Zach Goldstein Divya John
