MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for three days, then the water will flow into the egg. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The percent of water in vinegar is 95%. The percent of water in an egg is 85%. That means that vinegar has more water concentration then an egg, therefore the water will flow from the vinegar through the membrane into the egg. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 3 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.5 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 with egg 250 without egg 295 with egg 215 without egg 275 with egg 200 without egg OBSERVATIONS 50 ml displacement The egg is fizzing and bubbles are collecting on the shell. The egg was frothy The egg had a crack There were chunky white things on the outer rim. Glossy The membrane was yellow and transparent. Squishy

CONCLUSION In this lab, we tested the affects of osmosis on an egg. To test that, we placed an egg in 250 ml of white vinegar for 4 days. By the 4th day, the egg had expanded by 3.5 cm clearly showing that the water flowed from the vinegar into the egg. The average expansion in the 7th grade was 2.7 cm. I hypothesized that the water molecules would flow from an area of high concentration, across a selectively permeable membrane, to an area of low concentration. My hypothesis was correct 100% of the time. ANALYSIS 1. The eggshell dissolved because of the chemical reaction between the vinegar (weak acid) and the eggshell (calcium carbonate). When the acetic acid met the calcium carbonate, the acid started dissolving the eggshell producing CO2. The acid completely dissolved the shell only leaving the membrane intact. 2. Group 3s egg expanding 4.5 cm in 4 days, and group 7s egg expanded 1.1 cm in 4 days. The difference in expansion was 3.4 cm. Group 3s egg expanded at a rate of 1.125 cm a day, while group 7s egg expanded at a rate of 0.275 cm a day. These groups got different results because period 3 started with a larger egg. The egg had a larger surface area so it could absorb more water. 3. Cells need water to carry out functions to help them survive. Water cools the temperature of the cell, it dilutes chemicals, it helps materials flow to the cell, and it helps the cell keep its shape. Without water, the cell wouldnt be able to carry out these functions and it would die.
