Character and Conflict in A Lesson Before Dying

CONFLICT
The definition of conflict is to come into collision or disagreement; be contradictory, at variance, or in opposition.

The conflict in A Lesson Before Dying is Grants feedback of the racial society, the execution of Jefferson and his inner conflict of dealing with living in a plantation.

Since Grant is a black teacher and Mr. Pichot is a wealthy white man, Grant is forced to respect him due to Grant was his racial inferiority implored by Vivian to go to Mr. despite his college education. As Mr. Pichots house Pichot instigates with Tante Lou and provokes Grant, and Miss Emma, Grant, fights back in order to teach Jefferson how to the urge to talk back and disrespect become a man and not die like a him. hog. This shows Grants attitude towards the white man who looks down on black men.

Grant vs. Vivian

On many occasions Grant wants to run away with Vivian and never come back, he also loses trust in himself and Jefferson. Vivian tells him that he loves his people more than he hates living here Through out the book, their relationship grows stronger even though Vivian is still working out a divorce

GRANT VS. REVEREND AMBROSE

Reverend spoke with Grant about Jefferson and God. Grants atheistic point of view and refusal of teaching Jefferson about God upsets Reverend. He thinks that Grant is renouncing God because he wont speak about God with Jefferson. This shows that Grants religious views and history with God was not very good.

GRANT VS. TANTE LOU


Grant is practically forced by Tante Lou to talk to Jefferson and make him die like a man and not a hog She dislikes Grants personality and attitude, but she knows he is the only one who can save Jefferson Knowing that Miss Emma is taking the execution very hard, she is the one that is strict and snappy with Grant She desperately wants Grant to change his views about God just like Reverend

Grant Vs. Jefferson


Although Grant is forced to speak to Jefferson after his trial, he begins to grow a relationship with him
Jefferson begins talking to Grant more, eating Miss Emmas food, and starts to write in his journal

Grant refused to talk about God with Jefferson but it was Jefferson who started to question Grants own spirituality
In the end, it may have been Jefferson who changed Grant In his diary we see Jeffersons transformation to embracing his execution
