Davis From: Cassie Roman Date: November 5th, 2013 Subject: Ethnography Proposal I have come to the decision to observe the discourse community of my family. I choose it because frankly, I dont get it. I want to better understand why my parents are the way they are. I want to understand my parents background and what makes them the way they are today. My family, we have had our ups and downs (mostly downs) and I want to know WHY. What is the culture of my family? Both my parents have been raised in two totally different settings. My sister and I were both raised in totally different settings as well. I plan to analyze each family member from an outside perspective (including myself) so that I may better understand the culture of my family. I want to understand what makes my family good, bad, mad, and happy. What makes us tick, and WHY it does that! My first time I am going to observe my family is this Friday evening when they come into town. I will use that night to discus family matter that we already need to talk about, as well as just observe and take notes over dinner and throughout the night on how we react with each other. i.e. How many times we fall into confrontation, belittle, praise, laugh, get mad. My second time I will observe them will be on Saturday when we attend the football game and spend he day together. I will also use past experiences and what I know and other sources to help me analyze this discourse community.
