Answer any One question form Part A and THREE from Part B
Use of IS 456 and Structural Tables permitted
Assume suitable data wherever necessary
___
PART A
1. Design a slender braced circular column of 400 mm dia., effective length 6m,
unsupported length 7m, to carry a factored load of 1200 kN, factored moment 75
kN-m (at top) and 50 kN-m (at bottom). The column is bent in single curvature.
Use M-20 grade of concrete and Fe-415 grade steel.
Draw to a suitable scale the details of reinforcement. [24+8]
2. Design a rectangular beam to carry a live load of 50 kN/m over an effective span
of 6m. The size of the beam is limited to 300 × 600 mm(overall). The support
width = 300 mm on both sides. Use M-20 grade concrete and Fe-415 grade steel.
Draw to a suitable scale the L.S and C.S illustrating the details of reinforcement.
[24+8]
PART-B
3. With the help of stress-diagrams illustrate the difference between the following 3
types of sections:
a) Under b) Over and c) Balanced [16]
4. Find the moment of resistance of a trapezoidal R.C section 400mm (top width)
200 mm (bottom width) and 400mm (overall depth) having 4 Nos 16mm dia.
tension reinforcement at an effective cover of 40mm. The permissible stresses in
concrete and steel in bending are 5 N/mm2 and 140 N/mm2. Take m=18. [16]

6. An R.C column 400×400mm supports an axial service load of 1000 kN. The safe
bearing capacity of soil at site is 200 kN/m2. Design a suitable footing for the
column using M-20 grade concrete and Fe-415 grade steel. Sketch the details of
reinforcement [16]
