SMB 3004
By Wan Hendra Wan Hamzah
Benchmarking
 Benchmarking is a
continuous, systematic
process for comparing
an organization's
efficiency in terms of
productivity, quality and
practices with those
companies and
organizations that
represent excellence
Definition
 Benchmarking is a tool to help you improve your
business processes. Any business process can be
benchmarked."

 "Benchmarking is the process of identifying,

understanding and adapting outstanding practices
from organizations anywhere in the world to help
your organization improve its performance."

 "Benchmarking is highly respected practice in the

business world. It is an activity that looks
outward to find best practice and high
performance and then measures actual business
operations against those goals."
Bench Learning
 According to Karlof and Ostblom
(1993) the effect of benchmarking
on the development of organization
is astonishing.
 The process of making people
adopt the practices of their
benchmarking partners opens
their minds and creates a
learning organization.
 Karlof and Ostblom call the
phenomena benchlearning.
Bench Learning
 Bench learning can
be described as a
combination of
business
development and
organizational
learning

Bench Learning
 Karlof, Lundgren and
Froment (2001) note
that benchmarking is
both designed for and
used by management.
 Benchmarking has
seldom been used as an
instrument for broad
learning in
organizations.
Bench Learning
 Bench learning is aimed at
being a method that
combines an efficiency target
with the goal of getting every
organization member to take
part in and influence
development process.
 Bench learning will meet the
need for quick and effective
learning arising from the
demand for innovativeness
and creativity
