ANNIE ELLEDGE & DANA RINAUDO

Domestic Violence
In 2012, there were 9,134 reported cases of domestic

violence in Travis County. Only about 1 in 5 victims of domestic violence report abuse to the police. Shelters in Travis County are severely lacking in supplies needed to care for victims of domestic violence.

SafePlace
SafePlace is a local organization aimed at ending

domestic and sexual abuse in the Austin area. The organization provides a shelter for victims of domestic violence as well as counseling, medical treatment and legal advocacy for victims. SafePlace also works to prevent violence through the Expect Respect initiative and education for young people.

SafePlace
SafePlace receives about $6,000,000 annually from

federal grants but the organization needs about $9,000,000 to help the number of people it currently does. SafePlace relies on donations for a large part of this extra $3,000,000. SafePlace severely lacks in donations during the months of October, November, April and May.

SafePlace: Steven Olender

Steven Olender, the Community Relations

Coordinator for SafePlace, met with us to discuss the needs that the organization has. Mr. Olender is responsible for raising $1,500,000 this year at SafePlace. Mr. Olender is our main contact who informed us how we can help local victims of domestic abuse. He said that donations and money are always need at SafePlace.

Austin High School Students & Faculty

Students and faculty of Austin High can also aid

victims of domestic abuse through their donations. Donations that students and the faculty provide can make a large impact in the local community.

Fundraiser Benefitting SafePlace

Monetary donations are helpful to SafePlace because

they can use the money for any of the services they provide. However, we did not select this option for several reasons:

Students can get service points in AGS through donations but not monetary donations. Some people are more inclined to give physical donations rather than money. There are no other donation drives that are collecting the supplies that we are so there is no conflict of interest.

Donation Drive Benefitting SafePlace

We plan to hold a donation drive within the next few

weeks to collect needed supplies for SafePlace. Since many victims of domestic violence have to escape quickly and often times with their children, SafePlace is in need of the following items:

Baby Supplies

Diapers, wipes, baby powder, lotion etc.

Toiletries

Shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, etc.

Communication Plan: Parents

We are currently drafting a letter that will be sent to

the parents of AGS students by the AGS Secretary, Mrs. Lewis.

Communication Plan: Parents

Parents of the Academy for Global Studies.docx

Communication Plan: Parents

The letter is more formal than our other

communication plans because parents often times expect more professional e-mails. We also provided more information on SafePlace so that the parents know who their donations are going to.

Communication Plan: Students & Faculty

In order to reach the faculty and students outside of

AGS we plan to issue a request for an announcement about our donation drive to be read on K-AHS.

Communication Plan: Students & Faculty

Students and Faculty, would you like to help

support victims of domestic violence? If so, donate baby supplies and toiletries for Annie Elledge and Dana Rinaudos Capstone project. All donations will go to SafePlace, a local organization that provides shelter and services for victims of domestic violence, Donation boxes will be located in the AGS and 2nd Floor Office. The donation will run from [insert dates].

Communication Plan: Students & Faculty

Our announcement is less formal because we want

the donation drive to seem accessible to all students. However, we still provided some information about SafePlace so that teachers know more about the donation drive.

Communication Plan: Students

We plan to print flyers and post them around the

school that will advertise our donation drive as well as the opportunity to earn service points within AGS.

Communication Plan: Students

Student Flyer.docx

Communication Plan: Students

The flyer is quite casual.

It highlights the service points aspect of the donation

drive because many students in Austin High want to earn service points. It also provides a list of donation items in an easily read list and locations where the donation boxes will be for easy reference.
