Reflection This assignment was a culmination of all the readings, assignments we had done and the discussions we had participated in, over the span if the course. To take on the role of a Futurist was a new concept and I was not quite sure how well I would do in the role. In an attempt to find 10 trends for 2015 in the fields of Instructional Design, Instructional Technology and or Distance Education I consulted my good friend Google. From my initial research there seemed to be many possible emerging trends and it was a bit of a challenge to narrow down the trends to ten, (this would however be the first of a few challenges). None the less I started my draft and selected ten. As was expected the ten initially drafted trends changed a few times as I continued to do research

on these trends to develop my futurist report. Despite this initial challenge faced with this assignment, I was excited about developing the report and would lose track of the time as I sat for hours in front of my workstation, researching and designing my PowerPoint Presentation.

After the presentation was complete, I began the next task of creating a movie to upload to YouTube. Here is where I would face the biggest challenge in completing this assignment. I began another quest, this time on YouTube on how to convert a PowerPoint to a video format. There were countless tutorials of how to make a movie for YouTube, using PowerPoint. Unfortunately not all the results were applicable to my situation, due to system compatibility issues; there were however a few recommendations that were helpful. Not making much headway with what I unready found, I started to think back on assignment two and how I was able to create a video with the new media tool Snagit. The hope of completing my video using the screen capture tool was short lived, as I found that due to upgrades with the tool, it was no longer compatible with my system. I then remembered a colleague in the course making a recommendation to use Moyea and decided to give it a try. I downloaded the software and finally was able to produce a video that retained the animation and audio that I had utilized in my presentation, and did not produce a watermark in the middle of the movie, to take away from the content of the presentation.

While the challenges of this assignment seemed like it would not end, my experience was not all bad. In the process of completing the assignment, I was inspired and excited about the future possibilities in Instructional Technology, especially by the ground breaking work, if you will of David Thronburg, Jessie Woolley-Wilson and Sajan George. Through their passions and

dedication for making a difference in education, they have made great contributions to education and learning. Through this assignment I was also provided with a peek into the future and this will no doubt allow me to be more prepared to meet it, especially as a future Education Technologist. We cannot teach our students the way we were taught if we expect them to function effectively in the world of the future. We must therefore leverage all the resources we can to teach them in a new way, and educate them to be able to thrive in the future. The main take away from assignment four is that, being a part of the fields of Instructional Design, Instructional Technology and Distance Education I should proactively observe emerging trends and issues and by so doing, I will be better prepared for the changes and be a better Educational Technologist.
