Child labour continues to decline, [3% decline between 2004-2008] but more modestly than previously [10% decline between 2000-2004] On present trends, the goal of eliminating the worst forms of child labour by 2016 will not be reached

Regulation of child labor through legislative with the first factories act , 1881.
The factory act,1948 - prohibits employment below 14 years of age And below 18 or above 14 can do work in factory by providing certificate of fitness granted by certifying surgeon and valid for 1 year. The hours of work shall be 4.5 hours on any day. The plantation labor act, 1951- applicable to all tea, coffee, and rubber plantations. Prohibits age of 12 years. And timing would be 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Mines Act,1952 - prohibits ,children below 18 years.(below ground). The Merchant shipping Act,1958- prohibits employment of children in a ship below the age of 15 years . The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) of Children Act of 2000: This law made it a crime, punishable with a prison term, for anyone to procure or employ a child in any hazardous employment or in bondage. The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act of 2009: The law mandates free and compulsory education to all children aged 6 to 14 years. This legislation also mandated that 25 percent of seats in every private school must be allocated for children from disadvantaged groups and physically challenged children.
