Shem Pafin PSY 101 Reaction Paper to the discourse on LGBT On Human Rights Homosexuality is not a present-day trend.

In fact, it existed a long time ago, and yet it still faces the same dilemma of not being accepted to the society it is born into. There is always a constant struggle and contradictions to their coming out by the same society who is supposed to understand. In some countries, people are detained or imprisoned because of their homosexuality; denied for employment, housing or health services; loss custody of children; and regular subject to verbal abuse. It is distressful to accept the fact that inequality still exist in the most severe form such as these. Though a person is formed by the society, everyone is unique and has their own ways on what to like, what to dress or what food to eat. The idea of choices and choosing is not universal. We are born to have the ability to choose and when a man cannot choose, he ceases to be one. Sexual orientation too is a choice which is what defined our identity. It covers sexual desires, feelings, behaviour and yes, identification. We all have different sexual orientation and preference, and gender identity. There are organisations like Gay Pride and other LGBT-themed organisations that understand these ideals, and believe that all people, regardless of their sexual orientation and preferences should also be able to enjoy human rights. As one slogan said, gay rights are human rights. If being gay a sin and should be abhorred and despised, what is it called for people who stone, discriminate and abuse others just because of their own preference? I think the issue lies not whether being gay is good or bad, but what is the right thing to do as a mere spectator to the subject. Is condemnation, violence, harassment or discrimination a right thing to do? Everything sums to a matter of respect to personal orientation and preference. What is likeable to a person might not be likeable to others. The importance of education lies with the understanding of these differences and that we may act civil towards one another.
