"Technical Information Sheet RJ45-CAT5 UNSCREENED TWISTED PAIR (UTP) TRANSIENT PROTECTION
The protector may be used on all common UTP systems, using 100BaseT Ethernet and other signalling protocols. The protector is suitable for category 5 cable. The insertion of the protected patch lead imposes a 1 metre penalty on a category 5 cabling system.

Installation
The protector is installed in line before the equipment to be protected. Novaris RJ45-CAT5 protectors have RJ45 sockets on both ends, and are supplied with a 500mm patch lead for convenience. Connect the protective earth wire to the equipment frame. Failure to do this will render the protection ineffective.

Introduction
LAN network cabling is highly susceptible to induced transient overvoltages caused by lightning strikes and other voltage disturbances. These transients may be directly induced in the cabling or may be caused by differential earth voltages due to mains voltage disturbances. The Novaris UTP protector is specially designed for the protection of twisted pair ethernet systems and incorporates fail-safe circuitry to protect sensitive line driver cards.

Specifications
Description: Shunt diode overvoltage protector for UTP cabling incorporating RJ45 connectors. 8 lines Transverse and common mode High-speed transil diode. 14V line to frame, common 40A 8/20us impulse rating: Line to line 40pF Line to frame 40pF 8-way RJ45 socket / socket (500mm patch lead included) 85 x 26 x 26 mm

Operation
The UTP protector is an in line device which may be inserted in the LAN at the server or terminal ends to protect either piece of equipment. It replaces a standard patch cord. Protection is provided by a custom chip high-speed transil diodes connected from each line to a common point for every line in the RJ45 connector. This common point then connects to frame ground via an earthing link. The circuit configuration minimises crosstalk between lines and virtually eliminates circuit loading due to component capacitance.
