Yvonne Chueh: Reading Response # 10 (Ken Burns 5): October 14, 2013

idea from text: Everglades National Park being the first park created to preserve animals and plants

response, reaction, or connection to idea: I found it quite ironic that the Everglades National Park took as much time and effort to establish as it did. For me, the first and foremost purpose of national parks is to save and preserve wildlife, as the world we are living in is creating pollution and destroying natural habitats for wild species. However, people were reluctant to make the everglades a national park. Like Runte said, people wondered where are the canyons and mountains? People did not realize that these animals and plants needed to be protected just as much as the canyons needed to be. observation about style or form: Similar to the previous Ken Burns episodes, lots of photographs were zoomed in, and sometimes out, throughout the video. This creates a more lively interaction, rather than just showing pictures like a slideshow. question this could prompt for class: Do you agree with what FDR did during depression to put work forces into national parks? Would you have done the same? Or would you have done something different?
