December 20, 2013 Mrs. Brosman bbrosman@triton.k12.in.us www.mrsbrosman.weebly.com Phone: 574-342-2355 Math This week we started working on fractions. We went over the
Words from Many Cultures
CCSS Language 2.e.

Unit 4.1 Weslandia

meaning of the numerator and denominator, how fractions relate to division, who to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa, and how to find equivalent fractions. When we return from break, we will continue learning about fractions by comparing and ordering them, putting them in simplest form, and placing them correctly on a number line. Its going to get tougher!

Reading

When we get back from break, we will be reading Weslandia which is a fictional story about a boy who is a bit of a loner and decides to create his own land or society in his backyard. He ends up making friends through his imagination and creativity. We will practice making inferences or drawing conclusions while reading.

Grammar We will be studying subject and object pronouns. Writing This week we focused on reviewing writing and editing

skills. Our next writing assignment will be state reports. We will start our research in January!

Spelling The next spelling list is a tough one! They are words from

around the world. Many dont follow a certain spelling pattern. This is a list that needs to be memorized and practiced quite a bit. Good thing there are two weeks to do just that! Theres no reason to get an F on this next test with that much time to practice. ww.spellingcity.com/triton5

Social Studies We reviewed our chapter on New England Colonies

and took our chapter 5 test. Students, overall, did really well on this test. I can see the improvement in taking notes and studying!

Science This week we learned about physical and chemical changes

that can occur in matter. When we get back from break we will review what we have covered so far and then finish up our unit on matter. Our test over this unit will probably come within the first two weeks of the new semester.

Note From the Teacher:

Fifth grade is still selling MudLove bracelets. We will continue selling until they are sold out. They have been selling like crazy, so be sure to buy yours before they are gone! We are excited about all of the fundraiser profits we are earning this year. It means less money you have to pay to send your child to Camp Amigo!!! :) Im sending home a winter break packet with your child over the break. It is not mandatory, however, if your child completes the packet it will equate to 10 extra credit points in math, reading, and English. Extra credit points to start out the new 9 weeks is not a bad thing! This will also help prevent set-back that often occurs with two weeks of unstructured academics. Science fair packets went home this week. Judging will be on February 7th. Have a very Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year!
