Elton Mayo setup a study to determine how economic incentives and physical conditions in the workplace affected productivity. The study found no relationship between changes in physical working conditions and performance. However, the study highlighted the importance of social and human factors to productivity. For example, the six employees enjoyed their secluded environment and increased attention from the researches, as a result they performed better than under normal conditions. This study reinforces McGregor's Theory Y assumptions about human nature, the researches in Hawthorne's study were seeking productivity increases due to physical condition change, and the employees fulfilled these desires with increased productive in a self fulfilling prophecy. Additionally, the study found that groups of employees influence behaviors of their members.
