Shipley Lesson Six 1

Lesson Six: Your Self: Applying Theories of Personality

Objectives:
Educational
Students should be able to:
1. Create a collage that clearly exemplifies four of the five approaches
discussed representing the students own personality.
2. Explain each approach using their collage through written communication.
3. Identify approaches that other students have created in their collages by
using reasoning.
Informational
Students will use their materials acquired from class and outside research in order
to create a representation of their personality from four different perspectives that
were discussed in class.
Instructional
Students will then analyze four unfamiliar classmates collages in hopes of
identifying and reasoning what theory the student has chosen to represent and
how and they think their classmate chose to represent it.
Standards:
Common Core Curriculum
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.9-10.1a Introduce precise claim(s), distinguish the
claim(s) from alternate or opposing claims, and create an organization that
establishes clear relationships among the claim(s), counterclaims, reasons, and
evidence.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.9-10.7 Conduct short as well as more sustained
research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or
solve a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize
multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under
investigation.
NCSS Thematic Strand
Individual Development and Identity
People, Places, and Environment
Context:
This lesson could be used in a psychology course or personal development course
looking at personality. This lesson is the final project for the class in which they will show their
understanding of the different theories and perspectives of psychology in a variety of ways.
Materials:
Laptops
Poster board for each student
Colored printing
Magazines, Glue, Markers, Crayons, Tape, colored paper, scissors
Assignment Sheet
Profile Graphic Organizer

Procedures:
1. (Day Eight: 30 minutes) Students will receive instructions on their final unit project and
have class to work on it.
2. (Day Nine and Ten: 50 minutes) Finish final unit project in class.
3. (Day Eleven: 30 minutes ) Presentation activity. Students will be instructed to set up their
collages around the room. This presentation activity will be their test. Students will
fill out a worksheet that asks questions about their understanding of different
perspectives. Based on their reasoning behind what theory or perspective they think their
classmate has represented will provide me with their individual understanding of the
theories.

Differentiation
Accommodation:
For struggling students, would only be required to create collages for two
of the four methods. Students would only be required to provide analysis
of two students rather than four as well. Struggling students would also
have the option of explaining their collages to me in person and only
required to provide a one page explanation of their methods.
Extension:
For gifted students, would be asked to further their research. Students
would look at other approaches to personality and identify the perspective
view that it taken. If possible students would also create another collage
based on representing this theory not addressed in class.

Personality Unit Project
1. This project will allow you to demonstrate your knowledge of personality theories that
have been presented to you. Start this project by reviewing the approaches to personality:
(It is not required to find your own resources on these views but it might be helpful.)
a. Trait
b. Psychoanalytic
c. Behaviorist / Social Cognitive
d. Humanistic
2. Apply each approach to your own personality. The ultimate goal will to independently
create a collage with four distinct regions. Each region will analyze your personality from
the point of view of one of the four approaches that you selected.
3. First you will need to profile your personality. Use the sheet provided to help you do this
by following the directions. (Required.)
4. Creating your collage. Use your notes and personality profile to create a collage that
represents your personality from each of the four approaches. This can be done on poster
board or on one of the provided websites at the bottom of the page. (Make sure the
sections are not labeled by approach we will be showing them to the class later and doing
an activity.)
a. Poster board users:
i. Divide a sheet poster board into four equal sections to represent each of
your approaches.
ii. In each region create an illustration or select images and words to
represent your personality based on the selected approaches.
b. Website Users:

ii. http://www.photovisi.com/
After you have selected which collage website above to use, you
will create four separate collages in order to represent your four
selected approaches. (Please review what poster board users are
doing. The only difference will be that your collages will be done
on separate pages and then printed and placed together.)

Shipley Lesson Six 4

5. When finished with collage, type an explanation for each approach using corresponding
regions of your collage. Identify which region and approach most clearly explains your
personality and why.
a. Requirements:
i. Two page minimum double spaced.
ii. Student clearly defines each approach and explains how each approach is
represented in collage through the individuals personality.
iii. See attached rubric for specific requirements

questions change to your next classmate!)
*Choose four different approaches to analyze when you decide which section- keep this in the back of
your mind!)
Person One
1. Whose collage(s) are you interpreting? ___________________________
2. Choose one section of their collage.
a. Describe and/or draw what you see.
