Intro: And back here in the Philippines, Pocholo The Voice Master Gonzales is a veteran in the art of Filipino voice acting. He is the voice of a thousand characters in Anime, hundreds of local commercials in radio and television and various children programs and some films. He also founded the voice of the youth or VOTY, of radio program giving young people a chance to voice their opinions on various issues. Please welcome the managing director of the Creativoices, Pocholo Gonzales and his marketing partner for Creativoices, Brian Matthew Ligsay. News Anchor 1: Good Morning and welcome to the program. Pocholo: Good Morning and thanks for inviting us here. News Anchor 1: Yes, we are very excited to have a voice artist, we never had artist on the show before. So tells us about the projects that youve done. I think, one of the childrens project that youve done did kinda pop out and the interesting is Batibot Pocholo: Yeah, i used to do a lot of voice over for Batibot. News Anchor 2: what was your character? Pocholo: Most of the voices that you hear on that TV Show, children Show are my voices, but thats the latest one not the old one because most of the people there are already old. News Anchor 1: Yeah right, and did you do Grudge? I thought Ive read it somewhere. Pocholo: i used to do one of the character, parang ako yung pumalit dun sa original one, but theres another one called Coco Quick wack. I used to do voices for them. I dont know if you know Kiko Matsing News Anchor 2: YES! Pocholo: But the later one, Im the one who did the voice because theres an original one, ako yung pumalit. The voice sounds like this magandang araw mga bata!. And also Brian here does a lot of voice over work that you can hear everywhere you go. Brian: for the most part, people would recognized the voice behind the LRT line from Purple Santolan Station, so whenever you ride the train you would hear the guy who says Thank you for patronizing the LRT. Wishing you a safe and convenient journey. And at some instance, some of the commercials that you hear on television, one of the iconic commercial that i have done is, i dont know if i have mentioned that is about this Ice Cream commercial where there is a bouncer guy who has a flashlight. So you remember that? Thats my voice, the guy who said that tugs tugs tugs, sige sayaw! Igiling mo, sige pa ganyan!

Pocholo: I dont know if you know this commercial with the two puppets. News Anchor 2: Two puppets, okay. Pocholo: is it okay for me to do this? News Anchor 1: Yeah yeah, sure sure. Pocholo: babebibo, bagong bibbo, uh, anong sikreto ng bagong bibbo? Tikman mo!, ah, pano? Puppet ako e ayun, thats my voice. Brian: so we do a lot of voices but you know, doing character voice like the one that we do, like we are doing sound lines is just a part of a big amount of work that we voice actors take on. You know, we do voices for animations, computer games; we also do voices for corporate videos and commercials. News Anchor 2: How do you able to that? Is this voice acting something inate? A talent? Can it be trained? Pocholo: its a talent and you can also learn it from.. you know because 10 years ago i went to the US, i learn voice acting in the US. Last year, i was invited speak to the International Voice Acting Convention, which is the Voice-over International Creative Experience. The only Asian Filipino amongst the Cannes and the Europeans and it is a privilege. News Anchor 2: so can anybody be a voice talent? Brian: yes! Yes! Pocholo: as long as you have a voice. Brian: well, we have a few requirements, the first stop is you have to have a good reading skills, second, you must be able to take directions very carefully and third you have to be have a very pleasant, not that very pleasant speaking voice, somebody would come up to me and say, I have this kind of voic, my voice cracks often and they mistake me for a girl and the whole stuff but if people can understand how you speak clearly without any ailment or anything because we are not doctors of the throat or the mouth then probably you fall into the category if becoming a voice actor, because everything we do here is industry-based and weve learn it to a lot of a long time. Nobody becomes a voice actor overnight but be started very early, the good part, when i started with this business first is a DJ i was in broadcasting while he was also doing his part in radio and television. So we both came from different parts of the industry and we jive together in one of radio drama project. News Anchor 1: and you also do Voice Worx, its the first voice acting workshop. Brian: yes it is, voice worx has been in operation since 2005. We have currently produced a thousand of participants because we dont only talk during our workshop and seminars but we also go outside and give talks in school and universities and we tour the Philippines, talking about voice acting and promoting it an art because we want people to recognize that there is something to the voice that people want to hear, and thats why they are getting you for a commercial for, you know, to represent the company, how would you feel if you would call up the phone and somebody talks like a ser kasi wala pa po si maam e, andun po sa kabila po, bumili po ng...

Pocholo: and also we promote voice acting as an art not just a career or something you gonna earn from. News Anchor 2: how young can you start? Pocholo: as early as two to three years old. Brian: as long the kid is being able to talk.. Pocholo: my son has done a lot of voice over work for me so hes really good. Hes only 8 years old but he can do a lot of voice. News Anchor 1: youre also a youth advocate. So what exactly are you doing? Pocholo: we i founded voice of the youth network, basically voice of the youth network is about encouraging every filipino youth to believe in themselves in creating positive social change through ICT and media. And right now i have a radio show called Voice of the Youth Radio and it is being aired now iin Radyo Inquirer. So most of the time i give opportunities to young people to voice the issues that affect them. News Anchor 1: What kind of issues nowadays are affecting the youth today? Pocholo: alot, unemployment, youth apathy... and i also have a program called Voice Care for Teachers. Im teaching teachers how to take care of their voices because teachers use their voices 12 hrs aday, imagine that and aside from that, they dont know how to take care of their voices and i also teach them the voice acting for effective teaching. News Anchor 2: Like how should i teach my son? Brian: you know, there are few things that you have to remember when you are teaching and taking care of the voice, because if you lose your voice you dont have any income or anything. Stuff like salabat, you know that thing? Its not good for the voice. News Anchor 2: Its not good for the voice??? Brian: yeah, you should avoid salabat because it burns out your throat and your speaking. Coffee, milk and even... News Anchor 2: but you can take it if you are about to speak but you can take it after? Brian: after or way before but never before the speaking engagement. Even the cure for soreness of the voice like namamalat ka, there is no cure for worseness in the voice. News Anchor 1: like what else can affect the voice? Brian: ofcourse theres cold water, theres juice that has pulp that is also bad for us, ahmm, very sweet drinks, alcoholic beverages so parang wala na kaming buhay no? News Anchor 2: tubig na lang talaga. News Anchor 1: so whats good for the voice?

Brian: anything thats warm actually, anything that can pass very easily to the throat is very ood for the voice. We are also not allowed to eat in full, whenever we are performing and a lot of things that we should consider is making exercises before the performance facial exercises, stretching and stuff like that. Those are the things that we teach in our workshop. News Anchor 1: please enlighten us and give us a sample, more of the sample Brian: we have a short skit that i could... okay i could start it off. alam mo Korina, meron tayong mga engrandeng pagtitipon dito ng mga voicetalents at saka mga artista at para balitaan tayo, andito po ang ating patroller si George Chorizo. We just wanna show you how powerful the voices because people take voice for granted actually if you could flash the image of this guys right now and we wanna show you that people, whenever you see an image of someone, you automatically relate to the voice and Im gonna give you a sample. Can we do that? The morgan frayman sample. Brian: let me correct that. It is not called impersonation it is called sound alikes. Pocholo: in impersonation you can see the person like you need to act it out, but we dont do that. Brian: voice actors are not supposed to be seen on television or on stage we are always behind everything. News Anchor 2: not to be seen, but not like a rule? Brian: well. Technically it is the rule. Pocholo: once you say voice acting, it is unseen performance. Brian: performance behind the mic, somebody thats unseen and the message is communicated properly so whenever you go on stage automatically referred to as impersonator, stage performer or comedian. Pocholo: actor but youre not a voice actor. News Anchor 1: but it involves acting. Pocholo: just like you, when you are behind the mic or on the radio, you are considered a voice actor cause you are not being seen News Anchor 1: so have to project more, because you dont have visual. Brian: well the last thing that we want to tell everyone is that we are not just looking for a voice we are looking primarily for a heart because everything that we do when performing behind the microphone has a big chunk of heart. So if you dont have the passion to do voices youre not cut to make this business. News Anchor 1: well, any.... that was actually great for your last words but anything else you wanna add?

Brian: wed like to invite everyone to attend our voice worx acting or voice worx seminar series, you can call us at the hotline 239-6468 or 408-3308 or maybe just visit our website www.creativoices.net or you could just google creativoices or voice worx philippines Pocholo: or just add or facebook account, creativoices productions News Anchor 1: okay great, thank you so much, Pocholo Gonzales and Brian Matthew Ligsay. That for coming to Daybreak Brian: Thank you.
