THE BIRTH OF MCDONALD'S BEGAN WITH RAYMOND ALBERT KROC.

Ray Kroc was the exclusive distributor of a milk shake maker called the Multimixer. Meanwhile, two brothers, Richard and Maurice McDonald owned and ran a hamburger restaurant in San Bernadino, California, in the 1950s. Ray Kroc heard how well the McDonald brothers were doing using his Multimixer to serve their customers. He met up with them and acquired the franchising right from them to run McDonald's restaurants. A great success story was in the making. In 1955, Ray Kroc founded the McDonald's Corporation and opened the first restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois. In 1961, he bought out the McDonald brothers. McDonald's grew into the largest restaurant organization in the world. Today, there are more than 30,000 McDonald's restaurants serving 47 million customers each day in over 121 countries. Ray Kroc died in 1984 but his legacy is very much alive. His success story continues

The concept was actually developed by Dick and Mac McDonald, who had placed arch shaped signs on the sides of their then walk-up hamburger stand. Looking from a certain angle, those arches appeared like the letter M. Hence, it was decided to incorporate them in the McDonalds logo, which came out as a merger of the two golden arches together. The companys name, McDonalds, however appeared in the McDonalds logo for the first time in 1968. Although the physical arches were discarded from all the restaurant s building design, the Golden Arches have become the crucial element of their corporate logo, and have played an instrumental role in branding the company. The arches are said to reverberate with mythic symbolism, rendering the image of McDonalds restaurant as a PARADISE of: Cleanliness Friendliness Self-discipline Cheerfulness.

The name of Ronald McDonald is the same all over the world, except in Japan. Because of the difficulties in pronouncing the R the Japanese know him as Donald

McDonald. In China too his name is McDonald Suk-Suk which means something like Uncle McDonald.

The first Ronald McDonald house opened in Philadelphia on October 15, 1974. It is an independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children. From early on, the organization had deep support from Ray Kroc's empire.
