1-3 Solving Equations by

Adding or Subtracting
Vocabulary
• Equation- uses an equal sign to show
that two expressions are equal
• Solve- to find the value of the
variable the makes the equation true
• Solution- is the value of the variable
• Inverse operation – to do the
opposite of the operation… if its
addition, do subtraction – if it’s
division, do multiplication …etc
Vocabulary
• Isolate the variable- using inverse
operations to get the variable alone
on one side of the equal sign to solve
the equation
• Addition property of equality- you
can add the same number to both
sides of an equation, and the
statement will still be true
• Subtraction property of equality- you
can subtract the same number to
Determine which value for x is
a solution of the equation.
• X – 4 = 16; x = 12, 20, 21
___ - 4 = 16
___ = 16

• ___ - 4 = 16
___ = 16

• ___ - 4 = 16
___ = 16
