    Alkanes can undergo several reactions: 1) Halogenation - alkanes react with halogens like chlorine to form alkyl halides when heated or exposed to light. 2) Combustion - complete combustion of alkanes with excess oxygen produces carbon dioxide and water. 3) Cracking/Pyrolysis - thermal cracking of long-chain alkanes over a catalyst yields shorter alkanes and alkenes through either catalytic cracking or catalytic hydrocracking using hydrogen gas and heat.
