Economic Proposals

Summit: Boston Fall 2013 Date: 12/04/13

Country: Hungary Topic: Drug Decriminalization Illicit drug use and trafficking is a pervasive problem that causes economic decline in Hungary and in the world. Currently, drug use is penalized with ineffective criminal prosecution. We propose to decriminalize drug use, as Portugal did successfully in 2001. The government will treat drug addiction as an illness rather than as an offense. Addicts will receive treatment and education to permanently prevent drug dependence. As demonstrated in Portugal, drug addiction, drug trafficking, and the number of HIV/AIDS cases and overdoses will lessen, which will lead to a larger, more productive workforce. Instead of wasting resources prosecuting drug abuse, the government will devote more to the economy, creating employment opportunities for reformed addicts. All of this will encourage economic growth. We humbly beseech you to support the decriminalization of drug use because it can become a global policy that strengthens the international economy, making the world better for all.
