PURPOSE To establish & maintain a procedure for carrying out excavation at work sites.

SCOPE This procedure shall be applicable to all types of excavations undertaken by the Company.

PROCEDURE Responsibility The responsibility for carrying out this 6ethod )tatement shall be that of the #ro5ect -ngineer= unless otherwise specifically mentioned in this procedure. The !uality -ngineer9 #ro5ect -ngineer shall be responsible for inspection & testing.

Excavation -nsure excavation shall not be carried out which undermines or effects the stability of ad5oining property= buildings= services & paving. 3here such excavation shall not be avoided= ade>uate protection & support is provided in consultation with the Customer. -nsure noise= vibration= dust or other pollution which cause nuisance & damage shall be minimised. -nsure safe provision shall be made for pedestrian= vehicular traffic= when working in or near public highways. -nsure appropriate plant & e>uipment shall only be used= if the following conditions are met+

3hile dewatering during excavation 9 from the pit= the following care shall be taken+

-xcavated faces shall not be disturbed. -nsure the stability of other parts of the site or ad5oining property while dewatering. "ny sumps for water collection shall be constructed= clear of the excavations & filled in after completion of the work. #ermanent drains shall not be used for disposal of water from the excavations= unless otherwise directed by the Customer.

General -xcavation shall be carried out to the lines & levels shown on the drawings and ade>uate working space shall be considerd. )lopes & formation surfaces shall be trimmed true to the re>uired profiles.

Structures & Foundation The sides of excavation for structures such as basements & foundations shall be ade>uately supported. .urthermore= the sides shall be battered9 left exposed9 externally supported as per site conditions as agreed with the !uality -ngineer and the customer @if re>uiredA. 3here rock is encountered in cuttings= the side slope shall be cut to the lines= levels & slope as per the drawings and ade>uate working space shall be considerd. Supporting The Slopes 7ertical excavations in soft soil shall be supported or battered suitably= if the depth is more than 1200 mm. The decision of angle of batter shall be as per soil conditions= angle of repose= site conditions or as agreed by the !uality -ngineer in addition to the formal approval. The approval shall be taken from the consultant if re>uired. 'f the worker at the bottom of excavation is to work in sitting or lying down position= buddy shall be provided to guard. (uddy shall stand outside the trench & keep the worker in his sight all the time.

Edges of Excavation -nsure edges of excavation shall be kept clear at all times. The excavated material shall be kept away to avoid overloading the sides= avoiding collapse and preventing loose material falling back in. (uilding materials shall be kept away from excavations= provided to guard vehicles & e>uipment from endangering the excavations. 7ibrating rollers & rock excavators shall not be allowed to work close to excavations.

Disposal of Excavated Material The excavated material shall be disposed off at areas designated by the Customer 9 8ocal "uthority= as applicable.

Approval of All Excavations 3hen contractually agreed= keep the records of the Customer approval for levels & formations and bottom of excavations= before covering them or using them for subse>uent construction. 3hen rock is encountered= the Rock Excavation Certificate shall be prepared & signed by Customer= if contractually agreed.
