Dipole Antenna (Lab # 1)

Dipole Antenna:
A dipole antenna is a straight metallic conductor measuring half wavelength from end to end connected at the center of radio frequency(RF) feed lines .It is also called doublet RF voltage is applied at the center.

Relationship b/w Length and Frequency:

Length of dipole antenna is inverstly related to the applied frequency. Length(in metres)=150*A/Freq in MHz It is good to make antenna slightly bigger then of altitude length.

Radiation Pattern and Gain:

They have radiation pattern as toroidal shape having max at right angle to the dipole dropping off to zero on the antenna axis. Gain is the ratio of the surface power radiated by the antenna to the surface power radiated by the isotropic antenna.

Feeder Lines:
Cables that provide RF signal to the dipole are called feeder lines. For half wave dipole impedence of feeder line should be 73 ohm and for folded wave it should be 300 ohm.

Application Of Dipole Antenna:

Dipole antenna is used for following purposes: In Radio Astronomy. For receiving television broadcast (Rabbit ear antenna). Normal short wave application ; since they are very economical to construct.
