In 1200 the territory, which had previously been part of the Kingdom of
Navarre, was incorporated into Castilla. *At the beginning part of Hondarribia/Fuenterrabia *Full independence achieved 1766 by Royal Decree King Charles III.
HISTORY:
The strategic location of Irun on the border of three kingdoms (Castile, Navarre and France) made the town suffer numerous attacks of the neighboring kingdoms. A significant event was the first battle of San Marcial, on June 1522: though overpowered, defeated the troops of the king of Navarre, which had the support of the king of France. Later, in 1813, the Second Battle of San Marcial, an end to the War of Independence, with the victory over Napoleon's army in a bloody battle.
