Adding Suffixes
Three major rules determine the correct spelling of words when adding a suffix. Lesson 530 Spelling Rule One Spelling rule for adding suffixes to root words ending in the letter y. When a word ends in a consonant followed by the letter y, change the y to i before adding a suffix such as candy/candies, army/armies, baby/babies. However, if you are adding ing , then do not change the y to i as in cry/crying , try/trying , and imply, implying. If a word ends in a vowel followed by the letter y, just add the ending such as play/playing, joy/joyful, and stay/stays.
