THESIS OPPOSITION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE MASTERS PROGRAM

IN INTERNATIONAL AND EURPEAN RELATIONS

You should prepare your opposition in the following way:

1. First, the author will be given the chance to point out any mistakes in the thesis, such as
spelling mistakes, incorrect references etc.

2. You should then inform the seminar group of the way that you will organise your opposition.

3. You should present a short description of the contents of the thesis, its aims, methods,
theoretical approaches, and results etc.

4. Next you should point out any formal mistakes (spelling, grammar, references etc). If there
are many mistakes you should only give a few examples, and instead prepare a list of them
all and give it to the author after the opposition.

5. You should comment on the choice of topic, and its relevance for International and
European Studies in a broader perspective.

6. You should discuss the theoretical approach, its strengths and weaknesses, and its suitability
for the topic.

7. You should comment on the choice of methods and the suitability of those methods for the
aim of the thesis.

8. You should comment on the empirical material that the author has utilised and discuss any
possible problems with that choice.

9. You should discuss the results and if these are reasonable considering the empirical material
and theory.

10. You should discuss the analysis and conclusions, and if the theoretical approach has been
sufficiently utilised in these.

11. You should discuss if the aims of the thesis have been achieved.

12. Finally you should comment on the overall quality of the proposal, and suggest any
improvements that you feel can be made.
