    Captain Robert Falcon Scott led an expedition to the South Pole in 1912. He took 4 other men with him on the 800 mile journey, hoping to be the first to reach the South Pole. However, a Norwegian explorer named Roald Amundsen had beaten them there, arriving in December 1911. Scott and his men struggled against harsh conditions on their return journey, and all 5 members of the expedition perished before they could reach safety.
