Dear Friends,
After a long time and arduous struggle by civil society organizations for a Food Security Act, the
Food Security Bill got passed in the Parliament and received assent from President on 10
th
Sep.
2013. The Act has come into existence on the 5
th
July, 2013 and is considered as the first step
towards universelization and comprehensive food security.
Under this act 86 percent population of Bihar will be benefited. Every person shall be entitled to
receive 5 kg food grains per month. Rice, wheat and coarse grains will be distributed at the rate
of Rs. 3, 2, 1 respectively. However, Right to Food Campaign (Bihar) believes that the quantity
of entitlement is very low and without increase in production, proper storage, identification of
genuine beneficiaries, fair distribution, accountability of the concerned officials, strong and
effective grievance redressal mechanism, the act will be meaningless.
Right to Food Campaign (Bihar) understands that without sustainable & developed agriculture
and its allied sectors, land reforms and equitable distribution of livelihood resources, food
security for all cannot be achieved.
Candidates are wooing people for vote in the coming 14
th
Lok Sabha election 2014. At this point,
there is required an organized movement to initiate pressure on them to make agenda of
accessibility of livelihood resources to common people in the light of Right to Life
Considering all the facts, Right to food Campaign is organizing two day state convention on 1
