Why is the brain important?

The brain is important since it controls all the parts of the body such as the arms, feet, eyes, nose, hands, mouth and etc. It is the one that receives and interprets the nerve impulses coming from other parts of the body and from the external environment. The brain is divided into regions that controls various functions such as movement, speech and balance. The brain gives us our personality. It is the one that allows us to live and think for ourselves. When a message comes into the brain from anywhere in the body, the brain tells the body how to react. For example, if you accidentally touch a hot stove, the nerves in your skin shoot a message of pain to your brain. The brain then sends a message back telling the muscles in your hand to pull away. Without the brain, none of the body systems will function. The medulla oblongata and the pons control the heart rate, constriction of blood vessels, digestion, and respiration or breathing, and reflex centers for vomiting, coughing, sneezing, swallowing, and hiccupping. The brain controls everything; sight, sound, hearing, taste, touch, flexibility, emotions, etc. Without a brain you would be like a corpse.
