    Andrew Carnegie was a steel magnate who founded Carnegie Steel, one of the largest and most powerful industrial corporations of the late 19th century. He pioneered the use of structural steel which was used to build major bridges like the one in San Francisco. To encourage people's confidence in the new bridge technology, Carnegie famously crossed the bridge on the back of an elephant. Carnegie became enormously wealthy as the owner of Carnegie Steel, with a net worth of around $40 billion at his peak, second only to John D. Rockefeller. He later sold Carnegie Steel for $480 million in 1895 in one of the largest corporate deals of that time.
