What is Open Source?


A set of principles and practices that promotes
access to the design and production of goods and
knowledge.

This enables users to distribute, create and
modify software content, either individually to
meet their specific requirement or collaboratively
to improve the software.

Involves large groups of individuals with a
variety of talents and skills.
What is Linux?

A computer operating system that is built around
the Linux Kernel and also comprises a variety of
other software packages.

The Linux Kernel was created by Linus Torvalds
in 1991.

A Kernel is the central core of a computer's
operating system that handles interaction between
a computer's hardware and software.

What is Ubuntu?

A fairly user friendly
version of Linux that
has rapidly gained
popularity in the past
few years.

African word
meaning 'Humanity
to others'.

Up to version 9.04 or
Jaunty Jackelope.
Installing Ubuntu

Can be downloaded or CD's posted for free from
www.ubuntu.com

Try a live CD before you commit to installing.

Can be installed on a wide variety of computers
and can easily run alongside existing operating
systems.

System requirements are very low and is easily
scalable.
The Ubuntu Interface

The default graphical interface for Ubuntu is
GNOME but can be changed.

The Graphical User Interface (GUI) of Ubuntu
has many features and is easily customisable.

Whilst it is familiar it may take a little getting
used to.

If you encounter problems (which you will)
remember, there are extensive user forums.
