B.Tech III Year I Semester (R07) Supplementary Examinations December/January 2013/14 COMPUTER ORGANIZATION Time: 3 hours Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks *****
1 (a) (b) 2 (a) (b) 3 4 5 (a) (b) Explain about processor and describe it with a neat diagram. Explain main memory and write the functions of main memory. Explain briefly on arithmetic circuit with 4-bit arithmetic circuit. Write about logic micro operations. Explain about basic instruction cycle. What are the different phases in it? Draw flow chart. Discuss in detail about array multiplier. Draw 4-bit by 3-bit array multiplier. Explain the possible operating modes of integrated circuit RAM chips. A computer employs RAM chips of 256 X 8 and ROM chips of 1024 X 8. The computer system needs 2K bytes of RAM, 4K bytes of ROM, and four interface units, each with four registers. A memorymapped I/O configuration is used. The two highest-order bits of the address bus are assigned 00 for RAM, 01 for ROM, and 10 for interface registers. (i) How many RAM and ROM chips are needed? (ii) Draw a memory-address map for the system. (iii) Give the address range in hexadecimal for RAM, ROM, and interface. What is an interrupt? What are the different types of interrupts known to you, describe briefly? How is data transmitted between main memory and secondary memory using DMA? Explain in detail four-segment instruction pipeline. Briefly explain branch prediction method of handling branch conflicts. Explain in detail the two static bus arbitration procedures. What is mutual exclusion? Explain how it is achieved using semaphores.
