- Illustrated, amplified and disjunctive - Woman - Dark/bold colours used - Concept drinking (alcohol) - Singing about a problem/life Relationships between The lyrics are being illustrated when the sound waves turn into an lyrics and visuals image of a woman walking, the lyrics sing, crawling back to you which can mean that this is the woman that the artist is singing about and it is showing her in a powerful position which the lyrics show as the artist is helpless when it comes to her and he comes back to her every time. In another scene, the sound waves turn into the AM logo which is the initials of the band and also the name of the album that the song is featured in. This then turns into a womans figure which could suggest that it is the woman that the artist is singing about. Relationship between music In another point of the video, it illustrates each instrument and vocals and visuals that are playing in the song. The white lines represent the vocals; the red for the bass guitar; the blue for the electric guitar and the yellow for the drums. This allows you to see that the video moves and cuts to the beat as the sound waves stretch and change according to the music and vocals. This video is very different compared to previous videos by this artist as they all featured the band and others as themselves in the flesh, rather than in an animated way. This can be shown in their video for R U Mine? which shows them in the car, dancing along to the song and filming it on a handheld camera. The record company is trying to sell this song by creating a new and innovative way of illustrating the song. This creates an image for the band as womanisers as there are many women in the video wearing

revealing clothing, however, it also allows the audience to sympathise and emphasise with the band as the concept of this video is that the artist can't seem to get over a woman which is a feeling that many people have had. This video, especially, the album represent a change in the bands image and sound as it is more mature and speaks more to the viewer. There is a definite notion of looking as the woman have been used for sexual display, even though they are in a position of power as they are working, they are wearing revealing clothing and nude in most scenes which allows the viewer to think this. The camera work helps to show this as it focuses on the womens curves and features mostly their breasts and behinds which shows the theme of voyeurism. This may have been included because the song is about a certain woman and this could illustrate who she is and her personality. The video relates to the band as they think of themselves as real people with real emotions and feelings which is what they are trying to portray in the video as they are describing how they can't get over a girl, even though they know they should, such as in the lyrics do you want me crawling back to you? This video is concept based as it is about a certain woman and the purpose of this video is to illustrate the woman and who she is and how she makes the artist feel - Sorta hoping that youd stay.

How would you describe the audience for this music video?

Fans of the band would be the audience for this video, as they are the ones who would be the first to see it and talk about it as it is quite different from other music videos. The style of music in this song is quite different from the rest of the music from this band; therefore, the unique video might resemble a change in the bands style and might be used to reach out to more people. Another type of audience would be those who are quite artistic and interested in animation as this combines the two, therefore, it would pull them in and make them want to watch it so that they may be able to something similar.

Critical Observations
- Disjunctive - Dark images/characters - Alcohol - Fast vehicles - Weapons/violence - Quotes The lyrics, do run, run, you won't get far are sung during an image of a car driving by which can illustrate the meaning of no matter how fast or far you go, the problem will still be there. The lyrics, when you own the world, youre always home are shown after the main character had just thrown an alcohol bomb at a gang of bikers. This shows that you can do whatever you want and you can get away with it. This in a way allows the artist to mock the law as the character gets away with murdering others. The video cuts to the beat as the scene changes and events happen in time with the music, such as an explosion on the characters car happens at the same time as the drummer playing the music hits the crash cymbal, producing a loud sound which can mimic the explosion itself. The video also changes pace with the music because when there is a long note being played, the action or movement in the video goes on for the same duration as the not. An example of this is when the car gets hit with a bazooka as the back end rises into the air and drops at the same time as the chorus comes in and the music slows slightly. A guitar solo starts during the video when a new character is introduced when he jumps through flames on a motorbike which is an interesting way of illustrating the solo as they are known to be one of the best parts of the song as it is usually unwritten and comes straight from the subconscious creative mind. Artwork is a big theme and part of this video as the band wanted a

certain artist to do all the cover art and video art, therefore, it makes the song stand out from the previous videos by the artist and even by other artists. The image is quite specific and might only reflect the one album rather than the band as a whole. The idea behind it is that something strange had been created and come out of nowhere. This is how the band describes themselves because the members continue to change, forming something new and different every time. Previous videos are just as different and disjunctive because they never seem to illustrate the meaning completely, rather they try to show it in another way. There are no hints towards the artists or anyone else being portrayed as sexual objects in this video, however, there references to looking as the wing and main mirrors in the car have been used to allow the driver to look at others around him. This has been used to provide a range of camera angles so that the video feels more real because then the viewer will feel as if they are the ones looking into the mirrors which brings them into the song and makes them part of the story. The artwork is unique which is how the band describes themselves, therefore, it relates to their image. It can also relate to the artwork for the band, Gorillaz, as they have a similar, at times gruesome and surreal way of drawing their characters in different situations and storylines. This can be thought about as visual short stories or short films. This video is narrative based as it is telling a story through the bands and album artists eyes. This is shown through the artwork and how the lyrics link in with the visuals.

As this video is all about the art and animation, then many people who like the animation and cover art artist would want to see this video as they love the work and may want to see how it has been animated. Other artist may use it as inspiration and research into drawing

techniques and how their work would look as a computer based image rather than hand drawn. Animation artists may also use this video as research because the technique is very different to others as the characters were originally still life images, so their movements are very stiff and robotic and their facial expressions dont change.

Critical Observations
- Amplified - Relationships - Real life story - Tragedy - People from different walks of life At the end of the video, the name of the song is constantly repeated, as it was throughout the video, but now has a literal meaning, as it shows the man holding the woman after a car crash, suggesting that she is dead. The meaning of these lyrics are shown throughout the song, telling the viewer that it doesnt matter what happens during your life because everyone is going to die all the same in the end. Lets go get high is sung when the woman has a cigarette in her month which amplifies the meaning of the lyrics and shows that it is what she actually means, rather that illustrating it and using it as a metaphor. It suggests that the artist is mocking the law, rules and regulations as she thinks that none of them are important because everyone is born to die and nothing matters. The video cuts to the beat because the scene changes from the couple in the car to the woman in the white dress when the chorus or new line in the song starts. This creates a quick and easy scene change. The pace changes during the chorus which allows the movements and edits to quicken along with the song to create links between the two and to allow the video images to flow. During the scene when she is lying on the bed, the music pace and beat slow down which plays in time with the lighting that flows across the room. This sets the mood because as slower mood, flow or light and song pace create a relaxed atmosphere and sad mood for the song. This also allows a flow into the next scene or placing of objects and people in the same scene, as the man is then lying next to her when the light flows across the room again. There are quite a few close ups of the artist during the video so that

the viewer can see the emotion on her face so that they understand the lyrics and what is happening in the story. This can relate to the theory by John Stewart who states that music videos have similar aspects to film and TV with the use of lighting and camera techniques. This is shown through the close ups. The record company are using the artists image to sell the record as she is quite beautiful and wears elegant and revealing clothes throughout the video. The scene where the artist is sitting on a throne between two tigers which shows power and wealth as she looks quite elegant and the tigers suggest beauty, power and strength. This creates a false image as the artist in real life is quite awkward and shy. This video is quite similar to her others as they have the same themes of wealth, power and love. They also replicate the aspects used in film and television through the use of camera angles, mise-en-scene and lighting. There is a reference to exhibitionism at the start of the video when the couple are hugging because although she is in the nude, she is only allowing the viewer to see what she wants them to. Voyeurism comes in when she sits on the car and the viewer can see that she isnt wearing very much clothing and as the scene is at night and in the middle of a park/garden, then it allows you to feel the notion that the viewer is looking at the couple without them knowing. Especially when they are getting intimate in the car and the car door is open. This allows both the man and the woman to be seen as sexual objects as he isnt wearing much clothing either and they are both quite intimate. The man is quite forceful at one point which could suggest that the video is male dominated in the way that it is mainly a video containing the male gaze as men are more dominant. These concepts may be used not for any other reason but to allow the artist to tell her story of a point in her life or of someone elses. This allows her to explore the characters and show their personality and what happened. There arent may intertextual references in this video, apart from

relating to a variety of films and TV programmes in the way that it is filmed. It also contradicts the artist as the character and image that they are portraying is not who she really is, however, music videos allow artists to play a role or create a persona of who they would like to be. Religion is used at one point as the artist is sitting in the middle of a church on a throne which again suggests that there is nothing after life and everyone dies. Performance based best describes this video as it looks like a lot of acting and work went into it to make it look the way that it looks. This creates reality because the emotions and events were captured in a way that it feels like the viewer is there witnessing the whole event. The video is however also narrative and concept based as the artist is trying to show a story through the video by using literal meanings and ideas. As this is the artists debut album, she wouldnt yet have any fans; therefore, it is establishing her as an artist and showing her personality which allows her to express herself more and differently in each song. This then allows her to have a variety of different people as her audience, and for this exact video, the audience would most likely be young teenage females, who are looking up to this artist to fill the space of their idol as it shows that she is a strong woman who has gone through many tragedies which can allows other to empathise with her. This video also establishes her looks and beauty which could mean that boys and men may be secret fans but in a way that they are only fans because of her looks.
