The Tragedies of the 1960s

The Berlin Wall was a wall that divided East Berlin and West Berlin. When the wall was built families where separated. I have been studying Germany in my Global Studies class and saw a black and white photo of the Berlin Wall. The wall goes all the way across the picture, and it was made out of bricks and cinderblocks. On the top of the wall there was barbwire connected by a y-shaped rebar. The wall had worn off plaster on the bottom and the top. When the wall was built, it was a tragedy because families were split up. In the picture one family in trying to talk to their family on the other side, but they had to stand on a beam to see over the wall. A smokestack on the right of the photo connected the beam in the wall. That family was from West Berlin because they were dressed up nice, and if they were that close, the people in the east would have been shot. The buildings in the background that are taller than the wall were made of brick, and they were very dull and had worn off plaster. The east side all the houses are broken down and old. Finally, because of the harsh wall, families were separated, and it was a terrible time for three decades.
