Acids and bases

Acid is a substance when its added to water it produces hydrogen ions [H+].

Properties
Acids
Reacts with zinc, magnesium, and aluminum. Turns litmus paper red. Taste sour.

Strong Acids Strong acids completely dissociate in water, forming H+ and anion.

Weak acids Weak acids partially dissociate in water to give H+ and anion.

Bases A Base is a substance when added to water it produces hydroxide ions [OH].

Properties
Bases Feels soapy or slippery Turns litmus paper blue They taste bitter

Strong bases Strong bases dissociate 100% into the cation and OH-. Weak bases
When a weak base reacts with water the OH- comes from the water and the remaining H+ attaches itself to the weak base, giving a weak acid as one of the products
