State of matter Solids- Definite shape and definite volume Particles are packed close together.

. Solids have high potential energy.

Liquids- Definite volume but nor definite shape. Liquids take the shape of their container. Particles are close together but arranged more random than solids.

Gases- No definite shape or volume. Gases particles are spaced out. Gases expand and contract. Gases have the highest kinetic energy.

Phase changes Reversible- physical change occurs when substances change from one stage of matter to another. Energy is either absorbed or released during a phase change. Change from one stage of matter to another.

Endothermic- absorbs energy. Feels cold. Breaking a chemical bond requires energy and therefore is Endothermic.

Exothermic- releases energy. Feels warm or hot. Forming a chemical bond releases energy and therefore is an exothermic process.

Heat of fusion- the amount of energy needed to change from a solid to liquid,

freezing/ melting point.

Heat of vaporization- Amount of energy needed to change from a liquid to a gas, boiling/ condensation point.
