2-1 Adding

Integers
Mr. Graham
Vocabulary
Integer: the set of whole numbers, including
zero, and their opposites
Opposites: the sum of two opposite integers
is zero. Ex. -5 + 5 = 0, 4 + -4 = 0.
Absolute value: is a numbers distance from
0 on a number line.
Absolute value
The absolute value of -6 is 6.
Because it is 6 spots from zero on a number
line
It is written |- 6 |
| # | is the absolute value sign
Adding integers with same
signs
IF THE SIGNS ARE THE SAME, ADD AND KEEP
THE SIGNS!!!!!!!!
5 + 9 (both 5 and 9 are positive, but we don’t
write the + sign)
5 + 9 = 14
Sooooo easy….
Same signs
5 + 8 =
13
- 4 + (-2) =
- 6
We use ( ) to separate our signs
-7 + (-8) =
-15
One day, I want to be
as smart as Mr.
Graham……….I have to
catch up to the
caveman and George
first though
Adding integers with
different signs
If the signs are different………
SUBTRACT THE TWO #’S. KEEP THE BIGGEST
SIGN!! ( Use the sign of the integer with the
larger absolute value!!!)
Ex. -4 + 7
Subtract the two numbers…. 7 – 4 = 3
Keep the sign of the biggest absolute value.
The |7 | is 7. The |-4 | is 4.
7 is bigger so you use its sign. In this case +
So -4 + 7 = 3
Adding integers with
different signs
5 + (-8) = ………………..
Subtract 8 – 5 = 3
|5 | is 5 and |-8 | is 8
So we keep the (-) sign of 8
5 + (-8) = - 3
