ISD MUSIC DEPARTMENT Final Composition

Due Date: TBA To be submitted via email: sabucco@isdedu.de Criteria: A B C D

Assessment Task: Music Composition with Lyrics

Compose a piece of music that portrays the emotion of the poem, lyric or writing that you have chosen. The piece must repeat itself (eg. ABAC). It must also be written using 3 staffs; (vocal) melody, harmony (chords), bass line. Main focus is to communicate the feelings and emotions of the text you have chosen through the music you write.

Steps:
Divide the text into sections and identify the emotion(s) for each section. Name each part in order with a letter (eg. A-B-C). Begin composing using Sibelius 5. Start and finish on the note of C. Compose the music so it portrays the emotions you have described in the sections. When composing, begin with the chords (harmony), then bass line and finally the melody. Choose which elements of music you will use to portray the emotions of your piece of music and make notes in your workbook. Using these ideas will be important for the final composition, so keep good notes in your DWB. Remember to save your composition frequently, by giving the file a name and saving it in My Documents.

Divide the text into sections and identify the emotion(s) for each section. Name each part in order with a letter, ie: A B C. Dont forget to repeat at least one or two sections (depending on similar emotions) to balance your piece, eg: ABAC Always think of the structure of the piece does it match the text? Work in 4-bar groups or phrases to organize your music Organize your overall structure (using A B C etc) on the rough text of the poem Dont forget to repeat some sections! Use 3 staffs for your pieces: melody, harmony and bass line Start and finish on a C!
