A PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT: MEASURING BLOOD PRESSURE

The instrument measures the PROCESS of taking the BP and the accuracy of the outcome.

Scoring:
0 = Item was omitted 1 = Grossly Wrong 2 = Basic technique needs reviewing with trainee 3 = Technique understood but needs more practice 4 = Speed, style and technique excellent

1 Explains carefully to patient what will be done. 2 Explains blood pressure in language that the Patient can understand. 3 Rolls up Pts sleeve so no material under the cuff. 4 Centers cuff bladder over brachial artery. 5 Positions & supports arm at heart level. 6 Takes a palpatory pressure by: a)Palpates radial or brachial artery . b)Inflates cuff till pulse no longer felt. c)Inflates cuff at rate no more than 3mm Hg sec. d)Records level where arterial pulse again palpated. e)Deflates cuff completely. 7 Waits 30sec allowing arm to rest, while taking heart rate. 8 Repositions arm at heart level. 9 Places diaphragm of stethoscope over brachial a. 10 Inflates cuff to 20mm Hg over palpatery. 11 Offers Pt an opportunity to ask question.
