He even arranged for his funeral procession to avoid the neighboring town of Montague that had previously refused one of his fundraising requests.

Mr.McConnellwasfamousforhisfundraisingefforts,andwasawardedtheGeorgetownCitizenoftheYearawardin2004.Helater campaignedtokeepGeorgetownElementarySchoolopenwhentheEasternSchoolBoardthreatenedtocloseitforfinancial reasonsin2009. Hecametotheaidofthesportsplexin2007whenitwasmorethan$50,000indebt.Thetowncouncilwarneditwouldshutit down. Asmallgroupofpeoplevolunteeredtheirtimetostafftherinkthemselves.Mr.McConnell,whohadplayedhockeyinGeorgetown sincehewasayoungboyandhadasoftspotfortherink,decidedtotouraroundtheislandandsellticketstogamesand50/50 draws.Heraisedafewthousanddollars,helpingtherinkstayintheblackeversince. Mr.McConnellwassopassionateaboutthesportsplex,heneverforgavetheneighbouringtownofMontagueforrefusingtoallow himtopostafundraisernoticeonthetownssign.
