Generator step-up transformer with indications of abnormal high temperature

Lars Adeen HVdiagnose AB Sweden +46 705395848 lars.adeen@hvdiagnose.com

Three single phase units

BBC type TRFKdwz, 159 MVA (1-phase), 12/144,15/rot3kV, Connected D/y, Uk 12,3%, Vintage 1960

Two units with differnet problems

There were two remarks on these three units:
G2-1: The laboratory had remarks in the DGA regarding hot-spot indications (not involving paper). They recommended the owner to investigate G2-3: This transformer had remarks from the thermography inspection regarding hot-spots on the side of the transformer near the low voltage bushings. We were asked to pin point the problems and recommend suitable measures to be taken.

Test methods and equipment

The following tests were executed:
-Insulation, tan delta and capacitance on windings:
Doble M4000

-Insulation, tan delat and capacitance on bushings:

Doble M4000

-Mechanical and electrical integrity on windings:

SFRA test set of PAX type FRAX 101

-Winding resistance, WR:

Omicron type CPC100

-Transformer turns ratio, TTR:

Omicron type CPC100

Insulation and Capacitance

G2-1

G2-2

G2-3

Transformer Turns Ratio TTR

The ratio was measured with 200 V from high to low side. No remarks.

Given ratio from FAT

Measured ratio G2-1 6,9473 G2-2 6,9478 G2-3 6,9475

6,9354

Excitation test
The test is made at V-U. No remarks. G2-1 G2-1 G2-3 973,8 Watt 974,7 978,6

Heres the problem with G2-1 shown with SFRA at 20Hz!

Winding Resistance
Transformer G2-1 Connection Measured @ 16 U-V 180,2 mOhm v1-u1 5,15 v2-u2 4,29 v1-u2 v2-u1 5,63 4,29 Calculated @ 20C 183,0 mOhm 5,23 4,37 5,72 4,36 FAT @20 186,5mOhm 4,34 4,34

Transformer G2-2 Connection Measured @ 16 _______ U-V 180,7 182,2 v1-u1 4,29 4,33 v2-u2 4,28 4,31

Theres the problem Right under the v1 bushing!

Transformer G2-3 Connection Measured @ 16 ________ But what about the G2-3 U-V 180,2 183,1 then then? v1-u1 4,27 4,34 No signs at all for a fault v2-u2 4,29 4,36

there

No signs here either..?

Can You see it here then?

Now You see it! Case 13

G2-1 to the left and G2-3 to the right.

Touch-up paint with lower emissivity factor fooled the thermographer to believe there were hot-spots on G2-3.
