ME631: Home Assignment 4

Due: no later than November 15, 2013, 6pm

1. (40 points) Consider invscid stability analysis (based on Rayleigh Equation) of
boundary layer flow. Assume the following piecewise linear velocity profile for the
boundary layer flow (b: constant)

a. Draw the velocity profiles for b = 0.4 and b = 0.6
b. From the nature of the velocity profiles, comment on the flow stability based on
the Rayleigh and Fjortoft criteria
c. Set up [do not solve] the invscid perturbation equation(s) and the boundary
condition(s). The solution of the eigenvalue problem leads to the following
relation:

d. Using the above relation, plot c
r
vs. k and c
i
vs. k for b = .25, and b =-.25
e. Now using the plots, discuss the stability of the boundary layer flow. Verify what
you predicted in part (b).

2. (40 points) Calculate the zero lag cross-correlation between the following velocity
signals. Plot the scatter diagram for = 0, /4, /2. Discuss the physical significance of
the plots.
