Jamie L. Morrow Murrieta Regional Center and APU - West Campus Course: EDUC 526 Capstone Experience in Digital Teaching and Learning Professor: Dr. Jennifer Courduff Title: Equations Unit December 28, 2013
Type of Project
This project is for eighth grade Algebra 1 students. It covers linear equations such as onestep equations, two-step equations, multi-step equations, equations with variables on both sides, proportional equations, literal equations, and absolute value equations. This information is covered early on in the school year in Chapter two of their textbooks. These types of equations can teach students how to solve real-world problems relating to rates, finance, angle measurement, speed, and temperature, in addition to the purpose and correct use of mathematical formulas. It also allows students to work with one another to configure and create PowerPoints and an iMovie math music video detailing knowledge they learned within the unit.
The overall purpose of this portfolio project is to provide students a technologically advanced format for learning about equations. One that will meet the needs of eight of Howard Gardners intelligences while also incorporating the use of Blooms Taxonomy. This is done by following Blooms classification of learning objectives in order to produce a higher level of cognitive ability among my students.
providing them more opportunity to clarify, understand, and justify what they are learning with their peers. In addition, to all of this along with their small homework assignments, students can use their digital textbooks to access any needed resources at the touch of a screen. For instance, the digital textbook offers vocabulary resources, extra practice resources, and review resources that are simple and easy to access. In each chapter I have students complete the Interactivity Quiz which provides both them and me a quick and efficient way of measuring their understanding of the concepts. Lastly, I have provided four opportunities for students to work together in pre-assigned pairs or groups to complete a WebQuest, and create two PowerPoints, and an iMovie. These types of technologically skilled activities allow students to work together in gathering the information they have learned, discussing it as a group, analyzing it, and creating something with it that relates to the world they live in.
