Industries Facing Job Losses Because of NAFTA


The following table gives the number of jobs lost in major U.S. industries as a result of increased imports and plant relocations in Mexico and Canada from January 1, 1994 to September 28, 1999. From the table, we see that 244,266 jobs seems to have been lost in U.S. manufacturing from 1994 to 1999 and 15,618 in non-manufacturing, for a grand total number of jobs lost of 259,618. The table also shows that the apparel and electronics industries were the industries suffereing the largest number of job losses because of NAFTA.
