HW#9: Read pages 21-22 in Stearns. “The Idea of Civilization in World Historical Perspective.” In one paragraph answer the questions posed at the end of the
selection. Also read “ Civilization, Blessing or a Curse” and answer questions in your journal.

HW#10: Read assigned packet on Egypt, Mesopotamia, or the Indus River Valley civilizations. Please take notes using PERSIAGEM.

HW#11: Read background information on the Comparison Essay including rubric.

HW#12: Prepare for the in-class Comparison Essay on river valley civilizations.

HW#13: Read assigned packet on the Axial Age. You will be assigned one of the following: West Asia, China, India, or Greece. Take notes using the attached
sheet and be prepared to “jigsaw” with your classmates.

HW#14: Read “City and State.” You will read about four cities:
• What type of cities are Athens, Alexandria, Rome, Pataliputra?
• Give specific examples from each city that help illustrate whether they were a city-state, capital city, or commercial city.
• In what kind of city would we want to live?
• Whose interests do we want our city to serve?
• What functions do we want our city to perform?
