Chapter 9 A view to a death Summary: In chapter 9 we see the boys turn into complete savages.

. Jack leaves Ralph to form his own tribe Ralph is then left struggling to keep the fire going. Towards the end of chapter 8 Simon is hallucinating and talking to The Lord of the Flies. Simon realises that the beast doesnt exist and rushes to tell the others that they arent in danger. The problem is Simon runs straight into Jacks feast when Jack and the boys are in a frenzy and dancing. The boys see this as an opportunity to kill Simon, the only person that wasnt involved with this was Piggy. They later use the excuse it was dark or we were confused to hide from the fact they killed Simon. Key quotes: The Lord of the Flies hung on his stick like a black ball- The pigs head is covered in flies, its decaying much like the mannerisms of the boys which are deteriorating as they turn savage. The tangle of lines showed him the mechanics of this parody; he examined the white nasal bones, the teeth the colours of corruption. He saw how pitilessly the layers of rubber and canvas held together the poor body that should be rotting away. Simon realises that the beast isnt real that the beast is just a dead pilot. This is significant because it shows that life at home is no better than on the island as the boys are in their own war against each other much like the war back home. I wish we could go home Jack spoke Give me a drink shows assertion and power over the boys. All sit down Jack again shows control over the boys. Who is going to join my tribe? Notice that Jack doesnt call it the hunters anymore or his choir. Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Simons dead body moved out towards the open sea this line makes the reader feel sad about Simons death. Screamed, struck, bit, tore violent and gruesome language. There were no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws Golding makes the boys seem animalistic by using very violent verbs, this also shows us that the boys are enjoying the thrill of the kill.
