MAE2312 Homework #11 Issued: 11/20/2013, Five problems in total Due: 12/27/2013 11:00 am Problem 10-1: Read chapter

10.5-10.7, 12.1- 12.2 and answer the following questions 1. What are the relationships between the normal/shear stresses and the normal/shear strains?

2. Describe the theories of failure for ductile and brittle materials

3. What is an elastic curve? Sketch the elastic curve for a simply supported beam and a cantilever beam.

4. Write the set of differential equations that describe the relationships among v(x), w(x), V(x), and M(x), where v(x) is the deflection of the elastic curve, w(x) is the distribute force, V(x) is the shear force, and M(x) is the moment along the beam.

Problem 10-2: The 45o strain rosette is mounted on a steel shaft (structure A36). The following readings are obtained from each gauge: a=800(10-6), b=520(10-6), and c=-450(10-6). (a) Calculate the strain components (x, y, xy); b) Calculated the stress components (x, y, xy) form (x, y, xy) using Hookes Law; c) Determine the in-plane principle stresses, absolute maximum shear stress, and their orientations. (e) Determine if the loading causes the steel shaft to fail according to the maximum-shear-stress theory and the Von Misess stress theory.

Problem 10-3: The 60o strain rosette is mounted on a cast iron beam (Gray ASTM 20). (e) Determine if the loading causes the steel shaft to fail according to the maximum-normal-stress theory.

Problem 10-4: calculate the deflection (x) of the beam shown below using the superposition method (Assume EI is known).

Problem 10-5: For the beam shown below, calculate the deflection of the beam at point C, using the superposition method. E = 29 x103 ksi and I = 12 in4.
