Nuclear Waste Policy Act
With a need to be rid of nuclear waste in a safer and more environmentally sound way, this act was passed to monitor the disposal of such waste. Created a timetable and procedure for establishing a permanent, underground repository for highlevel radioactive waste. Provided for some temporary federal storage of waste, including spent fuel from civilian nuclear reactor. Passed by United States Congress in 1982.
